Name: Sergeant John Munch Nicknames: Munch Age: 56 Hometown: Lower East Side, Manhattan, New York Hair Color: Gray Eye Color: Brown Occupation: Sergeant Detective in the Special Victims Unit of the New York Police Department. |
| Background Check |
History: John Munch was born in New York on the lower east side in 1950, but moved to Pikesvill, Maryland, which has a large Jewish population, to attend high school. Going to high school was no day at the beach for Munch, who was an outcast due to his religion, his intelligence and his odd nature. When Munch was a teenager, his father committed suicide just after Munch told him that he hated his guts. To this day, Munch believes he is somewhat responsible for his father’s death. Munch also blamed himself for the death of a young girl who lived near him when he was younger. He felt he should have noticed the girl was being abused by her mother when he say her every day coming home from school. Despite his difficulties, Munch was a straight A student all throughout high school in everything but science and Spanish. He spent his summers working with an uncle at a fish market and became a conscientious objector during the Vietnam War. Munch's other family includes a brother who owns a funeral parlor and a cousin who would later become the accountant for "The Waterfront". He successfully avoided the draft, but a close friend did not and died in the war, furthering Munch’s distrust and anger towards the government. He was heavily into the protest scene and has taken illegal drugs before. After college, Munch joined the Baltimore Police department where he spent years walking a beat in some dangerous neighborhoods before being prompted to Homicide. He was first partnered with Stanley Bolander, an experienced detective with more that twenty years on the force. The two spent most of their time giving each other grief, Munch respected Bolander and counted him as one of his closest friends. When Bolander eventually retired after being suspended. Munch was paired with Kay Howard and later Tim Bayliss, who he also co-owned “The Waterfront” a local bar across the street from the station house with him. While working in Baltimore, Munch made a few trips to New York, working with local detectives there. He made friends with New York detective Lennie Briscoe, and when Munch moved to New York after his retirement the two were close friends up until Briscoe’s death. Munch didn’t take retirement well, quickly growing bored. He joined the New York Police Department and the Special Victims Unit in the 16th precinct. Munch was originally partnered with Brian Cassidy, a fresh faced rookie who he looked after like a younger-brother giving the other detective advice on everything from life in general to women. However, Special Victims was rough on Cassidy and transferred in 2000 to another unit. Munch then briefly partnered with Monique Jefferies, but she also left the unit shortly after. Enter Munch’s current partner, Odafin “Fin” Tutuola. While the two got off to a rocky start, they gradually came to like and respect each other. Fin now gives Munch rides to work since he no longer owns a car. After years of working in Homicide and entering some very dangerous situations, it wasn’t until Munch came to Special Victims that he was shot by a white supremacist in the ass. He was also reunited with an uncle while working a case. His uncle had been living on the streets because of his mental illness, depressive pseudo-dementia. During the case, the uncle killed a man and after refusing to plead insanity went to jail. He also took the Sergeant’s exam on a bet and passed, which led to him briefly leading the unit when Captain Donald Cragen was meeting with the brass. Munch lives in Washington Heights with his pet bird and currently has no romantic entanglements. He was four ex-wives and despite a cavalier attitude about relationships is still a romantic at heart, hiding it behind a quick wit and sarcasm. While mostly a desk detective these days, Munch has no intentions of retiring and will continue to investigate crimes until the day he drops. |
| Psychological Profile |
Personality: Munch is deeply cynical about life, the world, and the government. He is a staunch believer in civil liberties and sometimes this conflicts with his job when it goes against his sense of morality. However, his dedication to the job wins out in the end. The most notable exception to this is when he tried to help Amy Salway in a black market organ transplant. When he was caught it was only Amy’s silence on him being there that kept him from losing his job and being prosecuted. This event shows Munch’s deeply compassionate side, which makes him good with children and female victims. Munch is stubborn which fits his investigation style. He pays meticulous attention to detail, often picking up tiny details no one else notices. He will watch video tapes over and over again until he has picked out every last detail in them. His vast knowledge of literature, pop culture and politics make him good at undercover operations as well. His stubborn personality also lends itself to his belief in governmental conspiracies. He often lectures his co-workers on a variety of conspiracies that he holds as true. He gets worked up about anything political, especially the Kennedy assassination. Although not deeply religious, Munch identifies himself with the Jewish faith. He is sensitive to anti-Semitic jokes and is familiar with Jewish prayers. He speaks Yiddish along with Russian and Greek. |
